NBA Props for Wednesday: Fade Kevin Huerter in Game 5

Three of the eight first-round NBA playoff series have been wrapped up. However, we still have five to go, and the league has gifted us four enticing games tonight. We’ll be keying in on a guy that has struggled so far this postseason as one of our favorite NBA Props for Wednesday night’s games.

The Sacramento Kings are hoping to fend off the Golden State Warriors in Game 5 today — tipoff is at 10:00 ET. The winner of this contest will take a commanding 3-2 series lead, so look for both teams to try and bring their A-game.

De’Aaron Fox will be playing through a fractured finger on his shooting hand tonight. It remains to be seen how he’ll do it, but Sacramento will likely need a teammate to step up in the scoring department. But, I don’t think it will be Kevin Huerter.

NBA Props for Wednesday (4/26)

Kevin Huerter Under 21.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists (-121 @ Caesar’s)

Kevin Huerter has been a disappointment in his first four postseason games with Sacramento. He’s remained under this line in all four games in this series. And, he’s seen his playing time dwindle.

“Red Velvet” is averaging just 9.0 points per game in 27.3 minutes. He took just four shots in Game 4, seeing a series-low 20 minutes of action. His 7 second-half minutes and 3 fourth-quarter minutes also marked series lows, as head coach Mike Brown opted for defense.

The Warriors present a rough matchup for the former Hawks guard. He’s a minus-defender, which doesn’t help against the likes of Stephen CurryKlay ThompsonJordan Poole, and others. I struggle to see the playing time being there for Huerter tonight, and I love this spot.

Playoff Struggles

Huerter is averaging just 14.8 PRA per game this postseason. This is a significant drop-off from his 21.4 PRA per game during the regular season. However, his postseason struggles don’t seem to be baked into this line.

The 6-foot-7 guard seemingly fooled us all when he scored 27 points in a Game 7 win over the Philadelphia 76ers two seasons ago. This under has cashed in 20 of his 27 career postseason games. And, it’s been completely downhill ever since Huerter enjoyed his Game 7 moment.

This is his third playoff series since knocking the 2021 Sixers out of the playoffs, and he’s a significant reason why this might be his third straight series loss.

Huerter has remained under this line in 12 of his last 15 playoff games. Plus, two of his only three overs came exactly at 22 PRA. He’s averaged just 16.5 PRA per game in this sample. And, he’s shot an abysmal 24.4% from downtown. If he’s not hitting threes early on, Mike Brown will likely turn to Davion Mitchell and Malik Monk to close the game instead.

Decreased Role vs. Warriors

The Maryland product played 31 minutes in Game 1, followed by 30, 29, and 20 minutes in three games since. In seven total games against Golden State this season, this under has cashed in six of them. More importantly, Huerter did not exceed 32 minutes of action in any of these games.

Sacramento’s starting two-guard has appeared in 46 games this season where he’s played between 18 and 32 minutes. This play has cashed in 36 of them, good for a 78.3% hit rate on this prop.

Kev is shooting just 28.2% from three-point range over his last 12 games. It would be a surprise to see him snap out of that slump tonight for his best postseason game in two years.

Conclusion

Huerter’s poor defense and recent abysmal shooting have caused him to fall out of Mike Brown’s favor in the second halves of games. He hasn’t stuffed the stat sheet in the postseason over the last few years, so we’re rocking with the under for tonight’s pivotal Game 5.
